eXeL Hybrid Solar Water Heater

Leading-edge technology paired with the latest solar materials provides hot water using a fraction of the energy compared to traditional water heaters.

What is missing on purpose

No inverter. No battery. The tank is the battery.

Almost every solar product on the market spends its first move converting DC into AC, and its second storing the result in chemistry it will later have to convert back. The eXeL declines both. Direct current leaves the panels and lands on a resistive element, which is one of the very few loads that genuinely does not care what the waveform looks like.

What is left is a system whose storage medium is a tank of hot water — far cheaper per kilowatt-hour than the electrochemical kind, and already sitting in the house for other reasons. A water heater was always a battery. This one is simply honest about it.

How do solar water heaters work?

They generally work the same as a standard water heater. What sets the eXeL apart is that it requires very low voltage to heat the water. Strategically placed PV solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity. Even on cloudy days, the generated electricity is sufficient to power a proprietary electric heating element in the water tank. When the electricity flows through the heating element it generates heat, which is transferred to the water in the tank.

What are the benefits?

How does it compare to solar thermal collectors?

The difference comes down to simplicity and reliability. eXeL uses dedicated PV panels to power a heating element in the tank, just like a standard water heater but on free renewable energy, with no inverters or batteries. Solar thermal collectors heat water directly inside a roof-mounted collector; those systems are often complicated to set up, require a lot of space, and have been known to cause damage from leakage on the roof.
